Giới thiệu về Núi Nhật Nguyệt

Riyue Mountain — the "Sun and Moon Mountain" — is a 4A-rated scenic pass on the main historic route between Xining and Qinghai Lake, and one of the geographical and cultural boundaries that defines the eastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet plateau. The pass crosses a low ridge of the Qilian mountain system at an elevation of around 3,500 meters, marking the transition from the agricultural Huangshui river valleys of eastern Qinghai to the open grasslands of the high plateau to the west.

The mountain's name comes from a Tang-dynasty legend. In the 7th century the Chinese princess Wencheng was sent west to marry the Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo, in a diplomatic marriage that became one of the most frequently retold episodes in Tibetan-Chinese historical memory. According to the story, the princess stopped at the pass, took out her bronze mirror to take a final look toward her homeland, and — overwhelmed by the realization that she would not return — smashed the mirror in two halves, which became the sun and moon that give the pass its modern name.

Two small pavilions — the Sun Pavilion and the Moon Pavilion — were built on the twin peaks of the pass to mark the legend, and they are the most photographed feature of the site. The viewpoint from the pass itself is the other main draw: looking east, you can see the terraced fields and inhabited valleys leading back toward Xining; looking west, the land opens into rolling grassland stretching toward Qinghai Lake and, eventually, the Tibetan upland. The contrast between the two sides of the ridge is the essence of why the pass has historically been considered a "boundary" in Chinese geographic writing.

The climate at the pass is noticeably harsher than in Xining — even in midsummer it can be cold and windy, and altitude sickness becomes a real factor for some travelers. Bring warm layers, walk slowly, and stay hydrated.

For independent travelers heading from Xining to Qinghai Lake, Riyue Mountain is a natural half-hour photo-and-stretch stop. It is not a destination to visit in isolation — the value comes from the legend and from seeing the geographic transition — but as part of a Qinghai Lake day-trip it is genuinely memorable.
