Huaqing Hot Springs sits at the foot of Lishan Mountain on the eastern outskirts of Xi'an, roughly along the same road that leads out to the Terracotta Warriors. The site has drawn visitors for its natural thermal springs since antiquity, and by the Tang dynasty it had become a favored imperial retreat, most famously associated with Emperor Xuanzong and his beloved consort Yang Guifei. Their romance, and its tragic end during the An Lushan rebellion, is woven into Chinese literature and opera, and much of what visitors see today evokes that Tang-era court culture.

The complex is built around a series of pools, pavilions, and garden courtyards that recreate the atmosphere of an imperial bathing retreat, including reconstructed bathing chambers said to mark where Yang Guifei once bathed. Elsewhere on the grounds, sites connected to the 1936 Xi'an Incident, a pivotal moment in modern Chinese history, add a very different layer of historical interest. Walking paths climb partway up Lishan Mountain, offering views back over the springs and gardens, while covered corridors and traditional architecture make for pleasant strolling regardless of the season.

In the evening, an outdoor performance staged against the mountainside and pools retells the story of Xuanzong and Yang Guifei through music, dance, and elaborate lighting, drawing on the same narrative that inspired Bai Juyi's famous poem "Song of Everlasting Regret." Many visitors plan their day around catching this show after touring the grounds in daylight, so checking performance timing before arrival is worth doing.

Because of its location near the Terracotta Warriors, Huaqing Hot Springs is most efficiently visited as part of a combined day trip east of the city rather than as a standalone outing. Mornings tend to be calmer for exploring the pavilions and gardens, with the site filling up as tour groups arrive later in the day. Allow a couple of hours for the grounds themselves, plus additional time if attending the evening performance.
