Xiamei is a historic village lying in the foothills near Wuyishan in Fujian province, and it forms part of the cultural component of the Mount Wuyi UNESCO World Heritage Site. As the place where the famous Wuyi rock tea trade first took shape, it is one of the most historically significant villages in the region, and its well-preserved old fabric offers a quiet counterpoint to the dramatic natural scenery of the Wuyi peaks and the Nine-Bend Stream.
The village flourished from the late Ming and through the Qing dynasty as a hub of the tea trade, when Wuyi rock teas were gathered here and dispatched along the long overland routes that eventually carried Chinese tea far beyond Fujian. Wealth from that trade was poured into building substantial courtyard houses, ancestral halls, guild temples, and quaysides along a nine-hundred-metre artificial canal that runs through the village, lined with pavilions, carved railings, and shaded benches. The whole settlement has the distinctive feel of a southern Fujian water town, with narrow lanes, stone bridges, and the gentle presence of water running through everyday life.
The houses themselves are fine examples of Ming and Qing vernacular architecture, blending brick, stone, and timber carving into elaborately decorated doorways, lintels, and interior screens. Walking among them, visitors can read the prosperity of the tea-merchant families in the density of decoration and the scale of the courtyards, and the village's museums and family shrines help tell the story of the tea trade that built it. The atmosphere remains lived-in and unhurried, quite different from the busier core of the Wuyi scenic area.
Xiamei sits only a short distance from the Wuyishan resort zone, and it makes an excellent half-day trip away from the peaks and rivers, especially for travelers with an interest in architecture, traditional village life, or the cultural world that grew up around Wuyi tea. Combined with the tea-focused sites within the main scenic area, it rounds out an understanding of Mount Wuyi as a cultural landscape, not only a place of sublime scenery but also of human history shaped over centuries by the business of tea.

Xiamei Village lies about twelve kilometres southeast of Wuyishan city, founded in the Sui and flourishing from the Song; it is a China Historic and Cultural Village and part of the Wuyishan World Cultural Heritage site. From the early Qing, Jin merchants (the Chang, Qiao and Dashengkui houses) came to buy tea here, partnering with the local Zou clan to set up the "Jinglong" tea workshops and storehouses, refining loose leaf into black and brick tea that travelled via Zhangjiakou and Guihua to Kyakhta—making Xiamei the "starting point of the Ten-Thousand-Mile Tea Road" and northern Fujian's greatest tea-trading hub. In 2019 the Tea Road was placed on China's World Heritage Tentative List.
Tham quan: Wandering the village, one follows the more than 900-metre artificial canal (Dangxi) that threads Xiamei, its banks lined with Qing-era dwellings uniting brick, stone and wood carving, the Zou ancestral hall and the old Jinglong signboard, with ancient wharves and waterside pavilions still standing; the scene calls up the once-thronging Sino-Russian tea trade, an ideal place to feel the history of Wuyishan's commerce and the charm of its water-town past.
