The Yellow Crane Tower is the most famous landmark of Wuhan, standing atop Snake Hill on the southern bank of the Yangtze River in the Wuchang district. As one of the most celebrated towers in Chinese history and a national 5A scenic area, it has been praised for centuries as the finest tower under heaven, and for many visitors it is the single image most strongly associated with the city. The tower's history stretches back to the Three Kingdoms period, when a military outpost first rose on this site in the third century. Over the centuries that followed, it was destroyed and rebuilt many times, often by fire and war, and each reconstruction added new layers to its legend. The present structure dates from the 1980s, built in the classical style with upturned yellow eaves and a series of balconies climbing skyward, capturing the silhouette that has appeared in Chinese painting and literature for more than a thousand years.

The tower owes much of its fame to the Tang dynasty poet Cui Hao, whose verses about a yellow crane that once carried an immortal away from this spot made the site immortal in turn. The poem is so celebrated that even Li Bai, the greatest poet of the age, is said to have set down his brush upon reading it. Inside the tower, painted murals, calligraphy, and reproductions of the famous poems tell the story of the building and the literary tradition that grew up around it, layering culture onto the views.

Climbing the tower rewards you with sweeping views of the Yangtze rolling past the city, the long line of the Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge, and the three historic districts of Wuhan, Wuchang, Hankou, and Hanyang, spreading along both banks. The light is best in the morning and late afternoon, when the river takes on a softer glow. Allow at least an hour to climb the floors, read the inscriptions, and take in the panorama.
