The Turpan Museum (Tulufan Bowuguan) is the regional museum of the Turpan oasis in Xinjiang, located in the center of Turpan city. It is one of the most important museums on the Chinese Silk Road and provides an essential introduction to the history, archaeology, and natural environment of the basin. The collection draws on excavations from nearby sites including the ancient cities of Jiaohe and Gaochang, the Astana cemetery complex, and the Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves.

The galleries are arranged chronologically and thematically. The earliest halls cover the prehistoric and early historical cultures of the Turpan Basin, including the Subeixi and Yanghai sites, and include some of the well-preserved mummified remains and textiles recovered from desert burials. A middle section covers the Han, Wei, Jin, Northern and Southern Dynasties, and Tang periods, when Jiaohe and Gaochang were active nodes on the Silk Road and the basin hosted a successive Chinese military and administrative presence alongside local and Central Asian communities.

A separate hall is devoted to the Uyghur period and later, with documents, coins, ceramics, and Buddhist and Manichaean artifacts that reflect the layered religious history of the oasis. A dedicated paleontology room displays fossil remains recovered from the basin, including dinosaur tracks and eggs, underscoring that the Turpan depression has a deep geological history beneath its recent Silk Road role.

The museum also houses a significant collection of ancient manuscripts, including early paper documents in Chinese, Sogdian, Sanskrit, and Uyghur script, which are rotated on display. These written records, preserved by the dry desert climate, are among the most important primary sources for the social and economic history of the eastern Silk Road and are usually the highlight for visitors with a serious interest in Central Asian history.

For international travelers, the museum is best visited at the start of a Turpan itinerary, since most of its labels and reconstructions map directly onto the field sites around the basin. Plan on one to two hours; English captions are present for major pieces but not comprehensive, so an English-language guide app or audio tour improves the experience considerably. Photography is permitted in most galleries without flash.
