Miếu Phục Hy

The Fuxi Temple in downtown Tianshui is the largest temple in China dedicated to Fuxi, the mythic first ancestor of the Chinese people, and one of the most culturally significant Han Chinese pilgrimage sites in Gansu. The 4A-rated complex anchors Tianshui's identity as the traditional birthplace of Chinese civilization, a role reinforced every year during the Fuxi memorial ceremonies that draw participants from across the Chinese-speaking world.

Founded in the Ming dynasty and restored several times since, the temple is laid out along a central axis typical of formal Han Chinese ritual architecture. The current halls preserve heavy eaves, red walls, and dark-grey roof tiles, and the central shrine houses a sculpted image of Fuxi with the body of a serpent and the head of a human, the mythological form recorded in early Chinese texts. A distinctive feature is the bagua (eight-trigrams) arrangement embedded in the layout, referencing the trigrams that legend credits Fuxi with inventing as the foundation of Chinese cosmology.

The grounds also shelter ancient cypresses, traditionally said to number the sixty-four hexagrams of the Yijing. These aged trees give the compound a quiet, contemplative atmosphere distinct from working Buddhist or Daoist temples. Inside the surrounding galleries, exhibits introduce Fuxi mythology, early Chinese cosmology, and the long Tianshui-area archaeological record that gives the temple its cultural weight.

For a foreign visitor, the Fuxi Temple is the single best place in Tianshui to grasp why this corner of Gansu is treated as a root of Han Chinese identity. Allow an unhurried hour, and pair it with the nearby Tianshui Museum, which continues the story of the region's prehistoric and Silk Road past. Photography is welcome in the courtyards but should be respectful inside the shrines.
