Giới thiệu về Bóng da Thái Sơn (chi nhánh phố cổ Thái An)

The Mount Tai Shadow Puppetry theatre at Tai'an Old Street is one of the few dedicated venues where visitors can watch a continuous schedule of performances of one of China's oldest and most distinctive folk arts. Shadow puppetry in the Mount Tai area is documented as far back as the Ming dynasty — roughly six hundred years ago — and the local tradition is recognised as an important intangible cultural heritage form in Shandong.

The defining technical feature of Taishan shadow puppetry is its use of donkey-hide figures, which gives the tradition its local nickname of "donkey-hide shadow." Puppeteers manipulate finely cut translucent figures behind a backlit cloth screen, so that the audience sees the coloured silhouettes from the other side. A single puppeteer often performs several characters at once, supplying different voices while a small ensemble provides musical accompaniment on traditional string and percussion instruments. The result is an intimate, theatre-of-the-hand form that combines storytelling, music, and the visual delicacy of the figures themselves.

The Tai'an Old Street branch offers short performances tailored to modern audiences — usually around forty minutes to an hour, with excerpts from classical legends, local Mount Tai folktales, and sometimes comedic contemporary pieces. The figures are worked at close range, and visitors seated near the front can see the puppeteer's hands moving behind the screen. Some performances include a brief demonstration segment afterward, during which the puppeteer explains the craft of cutting and operating the figures and occasionally invites audience members to try.

For foreign travelers, the Mount Tai Shadow Puppetry venue offers one of the more accessible entry points into traditional Chinese folk performance. The language barrier is real — dialogue and song lyrics are in Mandarin and local dialect — but the visual storytelling is vivid and easy to follow even without translation. Pair the visit with dinner in the Old Street district afterward. The theatre's location inside the pedestrian zone means it is easy to reach on foot from most of the surrounding restaurants and hotels. Allow an hour for the show itself plus time for a meal.
