Chung Ying Street is a four-metre-wide commercial street on the eastern shore of Shenzhen's Yantian district, running directly along the border between mainland China and Hong Kong. It is one of the most unusual pieces of urban geography in the Pearl River Delta and a living artefact of the colonial history that shaped the region.

The street was established in 1898, when the New Territories were leased to Great Britain and the colonial border was drawn along the centre of the existing Sha Tau Kok village market. For most of the twentieth century the street was a single market square straddling the boundary, with shops on one side operating under British colonial regulation and shops on the other under mainland administration. After the founding of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, the street developed into a major duty-free shopping destination for mainland visitors, who came in large numbers to buy foreign goods not yet widely available elsewhere in China.

The street is famously narrow — only about four metres wide in most places — and retains the dense, market-style retail character of its earlier history. Shopping remains the dominant activity, with cosmetics, electronics, medicines, snacks, and branded consumer goods the main product categories. The "one street, two systems" arrangement remains the defining feature of the place, and boundary markers along the centre of the street mark the formal border.

Access to Chung Ying Street is restricted by border-control procedures. Mainland Chinese visitors require a special permit; international visitors are generally not permitted to walk the street without prior arrangement, as the Hong Kong side lies within the Frontier Closed Area and the mainland side requires the same permit regime.

For international travellers, the chief interest of Chung Ying Street is historical and geographic rather than as a shopping destination. Even without entering the street itself, the wider Sha Tau Kok area offers a clear view of one of the most distinctive colonial-era borders still in operation anywhere in the world.
