The Zhao Mausoleum — known in Chinese as Zhao Ling or simply Beiling, the "Northern Tomb" — is the burial complex of Hong Taiji, the second founding emperor of the Qing dynasty, and his Empress Xiaoduanwen. Set within Beiling Park in the Huanggu District of northern Shenyang, it is one of the most important imperial tombs in China and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Construction began in 1643, just before Hong Taiji's death, and the main structures were completed by 1651 under his son, the Shunzhi Emperor. The complex is the largest, best preserved, and most architecturally ambitious of the so-called Three Mausoleums Outside the Pass — the three early-Qing imperial tombs scattered across the Manchurian heartland.

The layout follows the classical Chinese "front court, rear chamber" plan, with a north-south axis leading through three sequential zones. The first, from the dismount steles at the southern edge to the Zhenghong Gate, sets the formal approach. The central section runs from the gate to the Square City and is lined along its spirit way by paired stone animals, ceremonial pillars, and a stele pavilion housing the "Stele of Divine Merits and Sage Virtues of Zhao Ling." The rear section is the Square City and the circular burial mound (baoding) that sits above the unopened underground palace.

The architectural detailing reveals the cultural fusion of the early Qing state. The Long'en Hall, the main ceremonial building, sits on a carved granite platform under a yellow-glazed tile roof, combining Ming-Chinese planning with Manchu ornamental motifs. The scale and grandeur are notable for a tomb built before the Qing conquest of China proper.

In 2004 UNESCO inscribed the Zhao Mausoleum, alongside the Shenyang Imperial Palace and the Fu Mausoleum, as an extension of the Imperial Tombs of the Ming and Qing Dynasties World Heritage Site, recognising its role in documenting the founding phase of China's last imperial dynasty.

For international visitors, the mausoleum sits at the heart of Beiling Park and is best visited as part of a half-day loop that combines the UNESCO circuit with the surrounding gardens, lake, and forest trails. The underground palace has never been opened, so the focus is firmly on the architecture, the processional sequence, and the surrounding park landscape.
