Núi tuyết Haba

Haba Snow Mountain rises southeast of Shangri-La directly across the Jinsha River from Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, the two peaks framing the upper entrance to Tiger Leaping Gorge. With a main summit above 5,000 meters, Haba is one of the most accessible "snow peaks" of the Hengduan ranges and a popular entry-level mountaineering objective in southwest China.

The upper mountain carries permanent snow and a small glacier system, with several glacial tarns scattered below the summit. The best known is Black Lake (Heihai), whose dark water sits in a corrie framed by cliffs and prayer-flag-strung cairns. Below the snowline, the slopes drop through dense conifer forest, alpine rhododendron thicket, and finally the dry valleys of the Jinsha side, creating one of the most complete vertical vegetation transitions in northwest Yunnan.

For travelers, Haba is best known as a guided climbing objective. Standard ascents take several days from the trailhead village of Haba, with base camp around 4,000 meters and a pre-dawn summit push. Independent technical climbing is uncommon; most groups sign on with local guides based in Haba Village, where several family-run outfitters provide equipment, porters, and acclimatization programs. Weather windows are tighter above 4,500 meters, and a successful summit is never guaranteed.

Even for non-climbers, Haba rewards a visit. The lower trail to the rhododendron belt and Black Lake is a fine two-day walk, and the road between Haba Village and Tiger Leaping Gorge is one of the most dramatic drives in the region, dropping from alpine meadow to subtropical canyon in a single morning. Wildlife watchers come for pheasants and for occasional serow or goral sightings on the high ridges.
