Giới thiệu về Khu danh lam thắng cảnh Cổ thành Sùng Võ

Perched on the southeast coast of Hui'an county, the Chongwu Ancient City Scenic Area preserves one of the most distinctive Ming-dynasty coastal fortifications in southeast China. Constructed in 1387 during the Hongwu reign, the walled town was commissioned by the imperial commander Zhou Dexing as part of a defensive chain built to guard against wokou raiders who plagued the Fujian coast in the late fourteenth century. Today the site is recognized as a 4A scenic area and offers a window into both military history and Hui'an's living craft traditions.

The granite walls form the visual centerpiece of the site, enclosing an irregular rectangle whose roughly 2.5-kilometer perimeter still wraps a working fishing village. Bastions, watchtowers, and arched gates survive from the original Ming layout, and visitors can walk significant stretches of the wall to look out over the fishing harbor and the Taiwan Strait beyond. Within the walls, narrow lanes thread past small temples, ancestral halls, and traditional stone houses whose walls still bear the marks of nineteenth- and twentieth-century life on the coast. The preserved fortifications are among the most complete examples of Ming coastal defense architecture in the region.

Surrounding the historic core, the scenic area has developed into an open-air display of Hui'an's celebrated stone-carving tradition. Workshops and shaded paths are populated by carved figures drawn from Chinese mythology, Buddhist iconography, local folk tales, and contemporary design. The carvings demonstrate the technical sophistication for which Hui'an stonemasons are renowned throughout southern Fujian and across the Chinese diaspora. Visitors can watch artisans at work with chisels and grinders, or simply wander among the dense rows of finished pieces that line the park's alleys.

The area also offers a chance to observe Hui'an culture at close range, including the distinctive traditional dress still worn by some older Hui'an women, with their colorful jackets, silver bangles, and folded trousers. The nearby coast supports active fishing communities whose daily rhythms of boats, nets, and morning markets give the area a living quality that complements the monumental architecture. Foreign travelers will find Chongwu an easy day trip from downtown Quanzhou, with the drive winding past oyster beds, sea walls, and smaller Minnan villages. Allow a half day to explore the walls, carvings, and harbors at a relaxed pace.
