Chùa Trấn Quốc

Zhenguo Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located about fifteen kilometers northeast of the Ancient City of Pingyao, inscribed together with the city walls and Shuanglin Temple as part of the Pingyao World Heritage listing. Its history reaches back more than a thousand years, and it preserves some of the oldest and most significant wooden architecture in northern China. The temple's most important structure is the main hall, a wooden building that dates originally from the Five Dynasties period in the tenth century, making it one of the very few surviving wooden halls from that era in all of China. Smaller later halls and courtyards surround the main building, adding context to the site's long religious history.

Because Zhenguo Temple lies well outside the city walls and is less visited than the central sights, it offers a quieter and more contemplative experience than most stops in Pingyao. Allow about an hour to explore the main hall and the surrounding courtyards at a relaxed pace. A taxi or hired driver is the most practical way to reach it, and many visitors pair it with a trip to Shuanglin Temple to complete a tour of all three Pingyao World Heritage components in a single day.
