Phố Quan Dã

Rua do Cunha is a short pedestrian street in the old village of Taipa and the best-known food street in Macau outside the casino resorts. Though only a little more than a hundred meters long and a few meters wide, the street concentrates a remarkable density of bakeries, sweet shops, restaurants, and souvenir stalls, and it has become the standard stop for travelers looking for the local Macanese and Cantonese snacks that the city is famous for.

The street's reputation rests on its bakeries. Long-established shops here sell the almond cookies, phoenix rolls, peanut candy, ginger candy, wife cakes, and other traditional pastries that have been the signature products of Macau for generations, and the scent of fresh baking draws visitors from one shopfront to the next. Many of the stalls offer tastings, and the competition between rival bakers has produced a remarkably high standard across the street. Packaging for travel is well organized, and most shops ship internationally.

Beyond the bakeries, Rua do Cunha is lined with restaurants and dessert shops serving the full range of Macanese and Cantonese cuisine, from African-influenced chicken to Portuguese egg tarts, from hand-pulled noodles to cold sweet soups. The Macanese cuisine that emerged from the meeting of Portuguese and Chinese culinary traditions is one of the oldest fusion cuisines in the world, and the small kitchens of the street are among the most accessible places to sample it.

For visitors, Rua do Cunha is best visited on foot and with an appetite. The street sits at the heart of the old Taipa village, whose restored colonial-era buildings, painted shutters, and quiet lanes make the surrounding neighborhood one of the most pleasant walking areas in Macau, and the contrast between the human scale of the village and the monumental casino resorts a few minutes away is part of what makes the area memorable.
