The Luoyang Ancient Tombs Museum, located on Beimang Hill on the outskirts of Luoyang, is dedicated specifically to the study and display of ancient tomb architecture, and is recognized as the first museum of its kind in the world built around this theme. The surrounding Beimang Hill area has long been one of the most significant burial grounds in Chinese history, chosen by rulers and elites across many dynasties as a resting place, which gives the museum's collection unusual depth and range.

The museum is organized into sections covering tombs from successive historical periods, a dedicated area for Northern Wei imperial tombs, and a gallery devoted to tomb murals. Rather than displaying artifacts in isolation, the museum has relocated and reconstructed dozens of actual tomb chambers from their original sites, reassembling them below ground in a layout that lets visitors walk through reconstructed burial spaces much as archaeologists encountered them. This approach allows for close-up viewing of tomb architecture, funerary objects, wall paintings, brick carvings, and other burial artifacts in something close to their original context.

Because the museum's main exhibits are underground and involve walking through a series of reconstructed tomb chambers, visitors should expect a somewhat different museum experience than a standard gallery visit, with cooler temperatures underground regardless of the season. A visit typically takes one to two hours.
