Chùa Sera

Sera Monastery is one of the three great Gelugpa monastic universities of the Lhasa region and one of the most rewarding half-day trips from the city center. Founded on the slopes of a hill a short drive north of the old city, Sera was for centuries one of the principal centers of advanced Buddhist philosophy in the Tibetan world, training generations of monks in the rigorous dialectical curriculum for which the Gelug tradition is known.

The monastery is laid out across a sloping site, with assembly halls, colleges, and residential quarters arranged around the two principal temples. The painted gateways, white assembly buildings, and gilded roofs are typical of the great Tibetan monastic foundations, but the hillside setting gives Sera a more dispersed and village-like character than the denser institutions of central Lhasa. Walkways and flights of stone steps connect the various colleges, and the surrounding scrub-covered slopes are themselves dotted with hermitages and meditation caves.

The highlight for most visitors is the afternoon debate session, held in the shaded courtyard of one of the colleges. Monks pair off in a dynamic form of philosophical exchange in which the questioner strikes dramatic, stylized poses toward the seated defender, bringing his hands together with a clap that punctuates each question. The debates are a serious part of the monastic curriculum rather than a performance, but they are visually compelling and accessible to observers, and they offer an unmatched window into the intellectual life of Tibetan Buddhism.

Sera is also known for its collection of religious art, including murals, statues, and printed texts produced within the monastery's own workshops. The walk up through the colleges and out onto the surrounding hills rewards visitors with wide views back across the Lhasa valley toward the Potala.
