Giới thiệu về Bảo tàng Thành phố Lan Châu
The Lanzhou Museum is the city's principal institution for the history and material culture of Lanzhou itself, distinct in scope from the Gansu Provincial Museum but complementing it by focusing specifically on the local story of the city. Located in the Chengguan district, the museum is housed in a building whose restrained classical style reflects the cultural weight given to history in the city's public architecture. For international visitors, it offers the most focused institutional introduction to the long history of Lanzhou and its surrounding area.
The museum's collections span the full documented history of the region, from the Neolithic period to the modern era. Galleries display painted pottery from the Majiayao culture, a Neolithic tradition whose sophisticated decorated ceramics are among the most celebrated prehistoric artefacts of northwestern China, as well as Han-dynasty wooden and bamboo slips that document the administrative and military life of the imperial frontier. The collection also includes ceramics, metalwork, jade, and paper-based materials from later periods, giving the visitor a sense of the continuity and diversity of the local historical record.
The Majiayao pottery and the Han-dynasty slips are the most distinctive parts of the collection. The pottery, with its bold painted decoration, testifies to the sophisticated visual culture of the late Neolithic communities of the upper Yellow River, and the Lanzhou area is one of the key regions for the study of this tradition. The wooden and bamboo slips, used for official correspondence and record-keeping in the Han administration of the Gansu corridor, are equally important for the documentation of the imperial frontier, providing direct written evidence of how the corridor was governed and garrisoned.
For international visitors, the Lanzhou Museum is best visited as a complement to the Gansu Provincial Museum, with the two together providing both the regional and the local perspective on the history of the Lanzhou area. Allow roughly two hours for a thorough visit. The museum is centrally located and easily accessible by public transport, and it pairs well with the White Pagoda Mountain, the Iron Bridge, and other central Lanzhou attractions. Information in English is limited, so travellers with a particular interest in the Majiayao culture or the Han frontier may want to read in advance or arrange a guide.
