Saint Sophia Cathedral is Harbin's most recognizable landmark and one of the best-preserved examples of Byzantine-style architecture anywhere in China. Originally built in the early twentieth century as a Russian Orthodox church serving the large Russian community that settled in Harbin during the railway era, the cathedral's distinctive green domes and red-brick façade have made it a defining symbol of the city ever since.

Although the building was officially renamed the Harbin Architectural Art Gallery in the late 1990s and now functions as a museum rather than an active place of worship, both locals and visitors still overwhelmingly refer to it by its original name. Inside, exhibits focus on the architectural and urban history of Harbin, including old photographs and models that illustrate the city's transformation from a small settlement into a major hub shaped by Russian and Chinese influences alike. The soaring interior space, with its high dome and quiet, echoing acoustics, gives a strong sense of the building's original purpose even without religious services taking place.

Outside, the cathedral anchors a large public square that has become one of Harbin's most popular gathering spots, especially in the evening when the building is illuminated and pigeons flock across the open plaza in front of it. The square is a favorite spot for photographs, street performances, and simply people-watching, making the area around the cathedral lively well beyond the museum's opening hours.

Saint Sophia Cathedral sits within easy walking distance of Central Avenue, making it simple to combine both landmarks in a single stroll through central Harbin. For most visitors it is one of the first stops on any Harbin itinerary, whether for the architecture, the history inside, or simply the atmosphere of the surrounding square, and it works well as an anchor point for exploring the wider Russian-influenced old town.
