Yangguan Pass Scenic Area sits southwest of Dunhuang, among the arid landscapes of Gansu province, and preserves the remnants of one of ancient China's most storied western frontier outposts. Together with Yumen Pass, Yangguan formed a pair of critical gateways on the Silk Road, the chokepoints through which travelers, merchants, soldiers, and monks passed between the Chinese heartland and the lands beyond.
