Xixi Ancient Village is a well-preserved traditional Lingnan settlement in Dongguan, notable for its deep history and its concentration of vernacular architecture from the Ming dynasty onward. Smaller and quieter than Nanshe, it offers a more intimate take on Pearl River Delta village life and is increasingly popular with visitors who want to see a historic Cantonese settlement without large crowds. For travelers interested in vernacular architecture, it is one of the most rewarding half-day trips in the city.

The village plan follows a classic Lingnan layout: narrow lanes organized around ancestral halls, study halls, and small temple structures, with residences extending outward in a tight grid. Traditional materials dominate — grey brick walls, granite bases, tiled sweep roofs with upturned ridgelines, and timber door frames — and the survival rate of historic fabric is high. Walking through the lanes, the texture is in the details: brick carving around the doorways, wooden lattice screens, stone drum blocks flanking the gate, and the faded painted plasterwork on the ancestral hall ridges.

Cultural life is part of the appeal. The village periodically hosts traditional Lingnan festivities — lion dance, dragon boat racing during the Duanwu festival, and lineage ceremonies tied to the lunar calendar — and timing a visit around one of these gives a much richer sense of how the place still functions as a community rather than a museum. A few small tea houses and craft stalls have opened inside the village, where visitors can try local snacks or pick up handicrafts.

Photographers tend to prefer weekday mornings, when the lanes are quiet, the light is soft, and residents go about ordinary routines. Xixi is easy to combine with Nanshe Ming and Qing Ancient Village and the wider heritage offering of eastern Dongguan. As a quieter, less-commercialized counterweight to the larger Pearl River Delta heritage villages, Xixi Ancient Village earns its place on a Dongguan itinerary focused on Cantonese vernacular architecture and rural Lingnan culture.
