A typical rhythm is to spend the late afternoon in Paifang Street and the old lanes, eat dinner nearby, then walk down to the river for the light show before retiring to a teahouse or hotel. There is no ticket and no enclosed venue — the show is genuinely public — but arriving a little early is sensible in peak seasons.
