Cung Ung Hòa

Yonghe Temple (Lama Temple) is Beijing's most important and most atmospheric Tibetan Buddhist temple, a rare imperial monastery of the Gelug, or Yellow Hat, school tucked into the northeast of the old city. Its history gives it special significance: the compound began as the residence of the imperial prince who became the Yongzheng Emperor and was the birthplace of the Qianlong Emperor, before being converted into a lamasery. Ever since, incense has burned thickly here, and it remains a living place of worship as well as a treasure house of art.

Passing through a succession of halls along the central axis, visitors move through richly decorated prayer spaces filled with statues, thangka paintings, and ritual objects. The temple is famous for its extraordinary Buddhist art, above all a towering Maitreya Buddha carved from a single piece of sandalwood, one of the most remarkable statues in China. Clouds of incense, prostrating worshippers, fluttering prayer flags, and the deep reds and golds of the architecture combine to make the atmosphere genuinely moving, whatever your own beliefs.

Because it is an active temple, the setting can feel busy and devotional, particularly in the morning and on Buddhist holidays and the first days of the lunar month, when local worshippers arrive in numbers. Visiting earlier in the day is both quieter and more evocative, with soft light and drifting incense. A visit takes around one to two hours as you move hall by hall toward the great Maitreya. Dress respectfully, and remember this is a place of worship as well as a sight.

Yonghe Temple sits conveniently in the northeast of central Beijing and pairs beautifully with the neighboring Confucius Temple and Imperial College just across the lane, along with the old hutong streets around them. Many travelers combine these sights into a rewarding half-day exploring a quieter, deeply traditional corner of the city.
