Feitian Carved Lacquerware

Feitian Carved Lacquerware was reorganised out of the former Tianshui Carved Lacquerware Factory, carrying forward centuries of the local craft. Tianshui lacquer ranks among China's four great lacquer traditions, prized for its distinctive shapes, hard lustrous surface and exquisite finish, an important heir of the handicrafts that lined the Silk Road. In 2006 it was named in the first batch of China Time-Honoured Brands by the Ministry of Commerce.

The Feitian brand is celebrated for stone inlay, flat-shell work and painted lacquer, its wares richly ornate and praised as the crown of Chinese carved lacquer; it is the gold-standard name of Tianshui and Gansu lacquer, sold far beyond China.

Its craft coats local woods—pine, birch, basswood—with native raw lacquer, building up layer after layer to form the body, then grinding it smooth, carving and inlaying colour with fine stones and shell, an exacting marriage of painstaking labour and rare materials that keeps the national-level Carved Lacquerware Technique alive.

The Feitian brand of Tianshui lacquer is a first-batch China Time-Honoured Brand and was also named among the second batch of Gansu Time-Honoured Brands.
