Changli Ground Yangge

Changli ground yangge is a folk dance of Qinhuangdao's Changli County, one branch of the wider yangge family alongside the Guzi and Jiaozhou styles; it entered the first national ICH list in 2006 as a sub-item of "yangge." It took shape in the Ming and Qing dynasties, deeply rooted in the festivals and farm life of eastern Hebei villages.

Changli ground yangge is built on three role-types—the niu, chou and kuai—each sharply characterised and comical in movement, prizing the sway of shoulder, waist and hip and the flutter of fan and handkerchief, accompanied by suona and percussion, its scene lively and uninhibited, a typical representative of eastern Hebei yangge.

Changli ground yangge carries the aesthetic and joy of eastern Hebei's people and is a distinctly regional branch of Chinese yangge art, holding real value for the study of the forms and evolution of northern folk dance.
