Zhuang Brocade Weaving Technique

Zhuang brocade is Guangxi's most representative traditional handicraft, ranked alongside Yun, Shu and Song brocades as one of 'China's Four Great Brocades'; its history traces back to the Han dynasty, it achieved significant scale by the Song, and was presented as imperial tribute during the Ming and Qing.

Woven on a backstrap loom with cotton warp and silk or cotton weft, the technique uses supplementary-weft insertion to build colorful geometric patterns—wan-character, phoenix and meander motifs—in vivid, eye-catching colors.

Inscribed in 2006 on the first national ICH list, Zhuang brocade weaving embodies the wisdom and aesthetic of Zhuang women and constitutes precious material evidence for the study of Zhuang traditional society, culture and textile history.

The core production centers are in Jingxi and Binyang in Guangxi; the Guangxi Ethnic Museum in Nanning has a dedicated brocade display area and regularly stages live weaving demonstrations.
