Dragon Boat Racing (Dongguan Dragon Boat Month)

Dragon boat racing in Dongguan is one of the most representative Dragon Boat Festival customs of the Lingnan water towns. Each year the Dongguan racing scene opens from Wanjiang, and the towns arrange their races by tide and patron deity, forming a "dragon boat month" that stretches over weeks. The saying "on the eighth of the fourth month, dig the boat from the bottom" marks the "rising the dragon" rite that lifts and repairs the boats buried in the riverbed, opening the season. Dongguan racing entered the third national ICH list under folklore.

Racing spans a full rite cycle — raising the boat, plucking the green, thanking the gods, racing and laying the boat to rest; on race day villagers who have trained in the summer heat for over ten days take to the water to a thunder of drums and a blur of oars, while tens of thousands line the banks, the clans using the boats to affirm identity and renew ties.

Dongguan dragon boat racing carries the rich tradition of water-town clan society, the rites of the Dragon Boat Festival and Lingnan racing culture, an important folklore sample for studying Pearl Delta folk belief, festival sport and clan organisation, and it remains vividly alive today.
