Baling Square is the great public plaza that stretches along the lakeshore in central Yueyang, immediately adjacent to Yueyang Tower Park and the Bianhe Street food district, and it serves as the unofficial living room of the city. For international visitors, it is both the natural starting point for a walking tour of the old lakeside district and one of the best free public spaces in northern Hunan to simply sit, watch, and absorb the atmosphere of Yueyang in the evening.

The most recognizable feature of the square is the enormous sculpture of the mythical archer Hou Yi shooting the Ba Serpent. Standing about 16 meters tall at the center of the plaza, the sculpture is based on a legend recorded in the Classic of Mountains and Seas in which the hero Hou Yi slew a giant serpent that had devoured an elephant, with the serpent's bones piling up to form the hills on which Yueyang now stands. This myth is the origin of the city's classical name "Baling" — literally "Serpentine Mound" — and the sculpture gives the square its name while tying the modern city to its mythological roots.

The layout of the square is symmetrical, with a strong east-west central axis that emphasizes the historical development of the city. The central plaza is framed by open lawns and tree belts, and the west side opens directly onto a terraced lakeshore promenade with views across Dongting Lake. The waterfront is edged with a stone balustrade carved with poems and inscriptions left by famous Chinese writers across the centuries, and visitors can read these texts while looking out at the same lake that inspired them. Nearby landmarks include the Zhanyue Gate and the city museum, both visible from the square.

For international travelers, Baling Square is best visited in the early evening, when the heat of the day fades, local families come out to walk and fly kites, and the lights of the surrounding buildings begin to turn on. The square connects directly to Yueyang Tower Park and to Bianhe Street, so a natural walking route is to begin at the tower, cross the square as the sun sets, and finish with dinner at one of the lakeside restaurants. The combination of monumental sculpture, public life, and the open expanse of Dongting Lake makes this one of the most enjoyable urban spaces in the region.
