The Yanbian Museum is the principal museum of the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture and the most important cultural institution in Yanji for visitors wanting to understand the history and identity of the region. Operating at a national level in China's museum system, it is dedicated above all to the history and culture of the Korean ethnic minority in northeastern China and to the wider revolutionary history of the Yanbian region, making it a particularly valuable stop for first-time visitors trying to make sense of the cultural and historical context that shapes the city around them.

The museum is generally quieter than Yanji's outdoor attractions, and weekday mornings tend to be the calmest time to visit, with fewer school and tour groups moving through the galleries.

Because of its central role in interpreting the wider Yanbian region, the museum works well as one of the first stops on a visit to Yanji, giving context for the city's distinctive culture, language, and food that enriches the rest of the trip, and it pairs naturally with the nearby Folk Custom Park for a half-day focused on regional culture.
