Гаочжуан Сишуанцзин

Gaozhuang Xishuangjing, whose name translates loosely as "Nine Stupas and Twelve Banyans," is the modern tourism and leisure core of Jinghong, built over the past decade in conscious imitation of a Dai riverfront town. It is not a historic quarter but a planned complex of low-rise hotels, guesthouses, cafes, travel agencies, restaurants, and shops, arranged along tree-lined boulevards anchored by small temples, gilded stupas, and a riverside promenade overlooking the Lancang. For many independent travelers it has become the default base for a Xishuangbanna trip, since most accommodation, dining, and tour logistics can be handled within walking distance.

By day, Gaozhuang is relatively quiet. Visitors browse shops selling Pu-erh tea, Dai silver, hand-woven textiles, tropical fruit, and products imported from across mainland Southeast Asia, or sit in cafes whose decor borrows freely from Thai, Burmese, and Dai traditions. The Mekong riverside walk is a pleasant place for a slow morning, and the small temples offer easy introductions to Theravada Buddhist architecture for anyone who wants a preview before visiting the more famous monasteries of the prefecture.

The district truly comes alive after dark. The Starlight Night Market sets up across its central squares, turning the whole area into an open-air bazaar of Dai and Southeast Asian food, crafts, clothing, jewelry, and souvenirs, with costumed street performers and live music adding to the carnival atmosphere. Peak season evenings here can get very crowded, and bargain-hunting is part of the ritual.

For first-time visitors to Xishuangbanna, Gaozhuang Xishuangjing is the most convenient place to stay, eat, plan day trips, and absorb the easy, cross-border, tropical atmosphere that defines modern Jinghong, all without needing a car.
