Храм Наньпуто

South Putuo Temple, known in Chinese as Nanputuo Si, is one of the most famous Buddhist monasteries in Southern Fujian and an important pilgrimage site in Chinese Buddhism, perched at the foot of Wulao Peak just next to Xiamen University. Named after Putuo Shan, the great Buddhist mountain of Zhejiang, it has long been closely associated with the cult of Guanyin, the bodhisattva of compassion. For travelers, it offers a calm, atmospheric, and culturally rich stop in the southern part of the city, with the added bonus of a mountain trail leading up behind the temple.

Within the temple complex, visitors move through a sequence of halls decorated with statuary, calligraphy, and devotional art, with clouds of incense curling from the great censers in the courtyards. The setting is deeply peaceful, especially in the early morning, when local worshippers arrive to pray and chant, and the temple grounds are shaded by old trees. The architecture reflects the refined Southern Fujianese style, with elegant roofs, stone carvings, and a strong sense of ordered, devotional space. Because it is a working monastery, the atmosphere remains genuine rather than museum-like, and the temple is known for its vegetarian food and for the Buddhist academy that trains monks from across China.

Behind the temple, Wulao Peak, actually a small ridge of five summits, rises above the city and is traditionally counted among Xiamen's great sights. A stone path leads up the hillside through greenery and rock inscriptions, rewarding a short climb with views back over the temple roofs, the university, and the sea beyond. The climb is not difficult, but it involves some stairs and takes about an hour round-trip; comfortable shoes and water make it more pleasant.

South Putuo Temple pairs beautifully with neighboring Xiamen University, which sits right beside it, and with the Wanshi Botanical Garden a short distance away, making for an easy half-day itinerary in the southern part of the city. Whether you come for religious interest, history, architecture, or simply a quiet, beautiful walk, it is one of the most rewarding cultural stops in Xiamen and a calm counterpoint to the busy seafront and Gulangyu Island.
