Yongjia Academy is a scenic and cultural site set along the upper Nanxi River in the hills of Yongjia County, Wenzhou. Despite its name, it functions less as a working school and more as a landscaped park that blends classical academy architecture with the natural beauty of the surrounding mountains and water. For travelers already exploring the Nanxi River scenic area, it makes a satisfying half-day stop, combining easy walking with some of the prettiest river scenery in the region.

The site gathers together nearly every landscape feature the Nanxi River is known for: clean river water, open gravel beaches, dense forest, dramatic rock formations, deep gorges, and tiered waterfalls. A clear stream runs through the whole length of the park, and the trails thread between rock pools, cliff bases, and shaded groves, opening onto successive viewpoints that feel almost theatrically composed. The multi-tier waterfall that runs through the grounds is one of the highlights, and the layered forest and changing light make every section of trail feel distinct.

The academy buildings themselves reference the long intellectual tradition of Yongjia, which produced one of the distinctive regional schools of Chinese philosophy during the Song dynasty. Pavilions, reading rooms, and courtyards in classical style are scattered along the river, offering places to rest and to imagine the life of a scholar working in such a setting. The architecture is modest rather than grand, and the appeal lies in the way it folds into the natural landscape rather than competing with it.

Most visitors spend a relaxed two to three hours here, walking the loop trails, lingering at the water, and perhaps taking a swim in the deeper pools in summer. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons, while summer brings the waterfalls to full strength but also the heat.
