Grape Valley (Putao Gou) is a long, narrow oasis strip along the western foothills of the Flaming Mountains in Turpan, Xinjiang, and one of the region's most visited cultural landscapes. For more than two thousand years, local farmers have cultivated grapes here, using snowmelt channeled through underground karez to irrigate vineyards sheltered from the desert wind. The result is a ribbon of green that threads between red rock and open sand, and the valley remains the agricultural heart of the Turpan oasis.

The scenic area is divided into several zones, including vineyard paths, the Wang Luobin Music and Art Museum dedicated to the composer who collected folk songs of the wider region, a Uyghur cultural performance area, and family-run courtyard guesthouses known as nongjiale. Walkways are draped with grape trellises, and during the late-summer harvest small stalls sell raisins, fresh grapes, melons, and nuts directly from the growers. The shade under the vines offers a marked contrast to the heat of the open basin and is the reason most Turpan itineraries schedule a Grape Valley stop in the middle of the day.

The valley also functions as a living introduction to Uyghur rural life. Many of the courtyard guesthouses serve traditional meals of hand-pulled noodles, naan, and lamb dishes, and short music and dance performances are common in peak season. Visitors can walk between the zones or use the shuttle service, and English signage at the main entrances is gradually improving as Turpan positions itself on international Silk Road routes.

Grape Valley's 5A rating, China's highest scenic grade, reflects both its cultural value and its infrastructure, which is more developed than at many nearby sites. The combination of working agriculture, vernacular architecture, and accessible cultural experience makes it one of the easiest places in Xinjiang for foreign travelers to spend a relaxed half-day. It pairs naturally with the Flaming Mountains, the Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves, and the ancient ruins at Gaochang, forming the core eastern loop of a Turpan visit.
