Ginkgo Village, formally known as Jiangdong Ginkgo Village, sits in the Gutun township about forty kilometers north of Tengchong and has become one of the most photographed rural destinations in western Yunnan thanks to its extraordinary concentration of ancient ginkgo trees. Once a quiet farming settlement on the road between Tengchong and the Burmese frontier, the village is now a popular seasonal destination that draws travelers from across China during the brief golden window of autumn. The village grew around a tradition of planting ginkgo trees, with some specimens in the village believed to be several centuries old. Today more than thirty thousand ginkgo trees grow in and around the settlement, ranging from young saplings to towering ancient giants whose spreading canopies meet above the lanes. Their roots buckle the stone walls, their trunks lean against courtyard houses, and their leaves cover the lanes, walls, and rooftops in a soft golden blanket when autumn arrives. The rest of the year, the village is much quieter, with the trees green through spring and summer and bare through winter, which makes for a more contemplative but far less photogenic visit.

Outside the autumn peak, a couple of hours is usually enough. The village sits in a wider rural landscape of fields, woods, and small settlements, which makes a slow drive through the surrounding countryside part of the pleasure of a visit.
