Pingjiang Road is a historic canal-side street in the northeast of Suzhou's old city, running roughly north-south for about a mile parallel to the city's original moat. Together with the small lane-and-canal network on either side of it, it forms one of the best-preserved stretches of pre-modern Suzhou urban fabric, protected for decades by its quietly residential character. The street is widely considered the most atmospheric single walk in the old city, and it lies a short distance south of the Humble Administrator's Garden and the Suzhou Museum.

The history of Pingjiang Road goes back more than two and a half thousand years, to the original founding of Suzhou as the capital of the Kingdom of Wu. The street preserves the double-grid plan that defined Suzhou's old city: parallel arrangements of road and canal, with small stone bridges crossing at regular intervals. Many of the bridges along Pingjiang Road carry names and inscriptions that go back to the Song dynasty, when Suzhou was one of the largest and wealthiest cities in the world. The houses that line the street are mostly Ming and Qing dynasty merchant and scholar residences, built in the typical white-wall, gray-tile Jiangnan style with small courtyards that open onto the canal.

In the past two decades, Pingjiang Road has been gradually converted into one of China's most carefully curated historic walking streets. Old residences have been converted into small bookshops, tea houses, handicraft workshops, and specialty stores selling local snacks, silk, and embroidery. The atmosphere is deliberately quiet, with no large chain stores and no neon, and the scale of the street remains pedestrian. Pingtan performance halls, where visitors can sit with a cup of tea and listen to Suzhou's distinctive story-singing tradition, are tucked into side alleys.

What distinguishes Pingjiang Road from other restored historic streets in China is that it remains embedded in a still-living old city. The lane networks that branch off either side of Pingjiang Road are still residential, and local residents continue to wash vegetables in the canal and hang laundry across the narrow lanes. For travelers, the street is best explored slowly; an afternoon walk with stops for tea, a snack, and a Pingtan performance offers the most accessible way to experience the texture of everyday life in the canal city that Suzhou was for most of its history.
