Шэньянский лесной зоопарк

The Shenyang Forest Zoo — also marketed as the Glacier Animal Park — is the main zoological park of Shenyang, set within the larger Qipan Mountain Scenic Tourism Development Zone roughly twenty-five kilometres northeast of the city centre. The location gives the zoo a markedly different feel from the cramped urban facilities of older Chinese cities: enclosures are spread across forested hillsides, and the design emphasis is on free-range, safari-style viewing rather than small cages.

The signature experience is the drive-through safari zone, where visitors board a tour bus and pass through open habitats stocked with the wildlife of the northeast and beyond. Northeast tigers, Asiatic black bears, grey wolves, sika deer, African lions, Mongolian horses, wild asses, ostriches, red-crowned cranes, and domestic yaks are all on show, often roaming in loose herds rather than penned individually.

Beyond the safari zone, the zoo's walking trails connect smaller exhibits and feeding stations, with educational signage in Chinese introducing each species and its conservation status. As a national 4A-level scenic area the zoo is run to standard Chinese provincial-zoo standards; international visitors used to Western zoo-welfare benchmarks should set expectations accordingly, although the open layout is a step above many older urban Chinese facilities.

The zoo pairs naturally with the wider Qipan Mountain area, which adds forest hiking, seasonal colour (lotus in summer, red leaves in autumn), winter ice-and-snow activities, and the Guandong Film and Television Town. Most visitors come by car or organised tour; allow a full day to combine several of these activities.
