Lu Xun Native Place is a 5A-rated historic district in the core of Shaoxing dedicated to the city's most famous son, the writer Lu Xun, who is widely regarded as the founder of modern Chinese literature. The site preserves the streets, residences, and schools where Lu Xun, born Zhou Shuren, spent his childhood in the late nineteenth century, and is one of the most important literary pilgrimage sites in China.

The district encompasses several distinct components, including the Zhou family compound, where Lu Xun was born and spent his early years; the Baicao Garden, or "Hundred-Plant Garden," the family's private garden where he played as a child; and the Sanwei Study, where he studied under a traditional tutor for five years. Together, these sites are the literal settings for several of his best-known essays, particularly the autobiographical pieces collected in "Dawn Blossoms Plucked at Dusk," which are still taught in Chinese schools and which most domestic visitors know by heart before arriving. The district also includes the reconstructed Xiantong Hotel where Lu Xun stayed as a young teacher, the Tugu Temple, and the restored canal-side streets of the surrounding neighborhood.

The significance of the site extends beyond the biographical. Lu Xun's writing during the early twentieth century, particularly the short stories "A Madman's Diary" and "The True Story of Ah Q," helped define the May Fourth literary movement and reshaped the use of vernacular Chinese in modern literature. The Shaoxing dialect, customs, waterways, and folk traditions that surround the native place form the social fabric against which much of that writing was set, and the site does more than preserve a writer's house: it preserves the world his work described.

For international visitors, the native place is the natural starting point for understanding Shaoxing itself. The district sits at the geographic center of the old city, is reached by foot from the historic canal-side streets, and pairs naturally with the nearby Shen Garden and Cangqiao Historic Street to form a single literary and architectural tour of one of eastern China's most historically layered small cities.
