О Парк Гуйшань
Guishan Park occupies the small hill at the southeastern edge of Dukezong Ancient Town in Shangri-La, rising above the lanes of the old Tibetan quarter to one of the best rooftop viewpoints in the city. The park was first laid out in the Kangxi reign of the Qing dynasty, and the central Chaoyang Pavilion, a multi-story wooden tower at the summit, remains its defining landmark.
The climb up the hillside follows a stepped lane that threads between restored Tibetan houses and small shrine niches. At the summit, Chaoyang Pavilion opens onto a panoramic view over the old town: the white and crimson rooftops of Dukezong spreading to the north, the modern extension of Shangri-La to the south, and on clear days the snow line of the Hengduan ranges on the horizon. The pavilion itself houses a small display on the history of the town and the Tea Horse Road that once linked it to Lijiang, Lhasa, and the tea districts of southern Yunnan.
Next to the Giant Prayer Wheel of Dafo Temple, which shares the hilltop, Guishan Park is one of the most important ceremonial focuses of the old town. Early in the morning, local residents climb the steps to perform their daily kora, the clockwise circuit of a sacred site, and the rhythmic click of prayer beads and murmur of mantras gives the hilltop a contemplative atmosphere distinct from the commercial lanes below.
For independent travelers, the park works as either a quick viewpoint stop or the centerpiece of a slow afternoon walk through Dukezong. The entrance is open, and the climb is short but steep; allow about half an hour for the ascent, the views, and a descent by an alternative lane to the main square. Sunset is the most photogenic time, when the gilded roof of the prayer wheel catches the last light.
