О Дворец Мэйлин
Meiling Palace, also known as the Xiaohongshan Residence, is a 1930s villa set on the forested slopes of Little Red Mountain within the Purple Mountain scenic area, immediately east of the Ming Xiaoling mausoleum. It was built as a country retreat for the Generalissimo and Madame Chiang — Chiang Kai-shek and Soong Mei-ling — and the villa takes its popular name from Madame Chiang, who used it as a seasonal getaway from the formal business of the republican capital. Today it is preserved as a museum and is one of the most visually distinctive buildings in Nanjing.
The architecture is a deliberate blend of traditional Chinese rooflines and Western interior planning, reflecting the cultural hybridity of the republican era, when Nanjing's elite commissioned buildings that combined Chinese exterior forms with modern Western conveniences. Inside, the restored rooms — reception halls, a private chapel, bedrooms, and Soong Mei-ling's painting studio — preserve period furniture, painted screens, and the kind of imported fittings that defined elite domestic life in 1930s China. The villa is approached through a formal landscape of cypress trees, and from the air the overall plan of the building, its access road, and the surrounding tree plantings is said to form the outline of a necklace, a detail that has become part of the popular imagery surrounding the site.
For foreign visitors, Meiling Palace offers one of the most atmospheric windows into the republican-period elite culture of Nanjing. It complements the more politically focused Presidential Palace by showing how the leadership actually lived, and the setting within Purple Mountain gives the villa a serene, country-house character distinct from the city center. A visit fills an hour or two and pairs naturally with the nearby Ming Xiaoling mausoleum and the broader Purple Mountain park, since all three sit within a short walk or shuttle ride of one another. The restored interiors reward visitors who take their time with the explanatory panels, which give a useful sense of Soong Mei-ling's remarkable life and of the wider Soong family's influence on twentieth-century China. The palace is particularly popular around the changing-color seasons, when the surrounding forest adds to the visual appeal of the approach.
