Bayi Square is the central public plaza of Nanchang, positioned at the intersection of several of the city's main thoroughfares and serving as both a geographical anchor and a symbolic one. The square's earlier name was People's Square, but it was renamed to commemorate the August 1st, 1927 Nanchang Uprising, an event that Chinese official history treats as the founding moment of the People's Liberation Army and that gives the city its nickname as "the place where the army flag was raised." For that reason, the square is less a neutral civic space than a site of national-memory significance.

The dominant feature is the August 1st Uprising Memorial Tower at the center of the plaza, a slender spire rising more than fifty meters and composed of a stepped base, a tower shaft, and a finial. On its upper portion an inscription identifies Nanchang as the place where the military flag was first raised, reinforcing the city's special status in the narrative of the Chinese revolution. Around the tower, the open pavement is used for strolling, flag-raising ceremonies, and the kind of evening socializing — square dancing, kite-flying, family outings — that defines public life in Chinese cities.

For foreign visitors, Bayi Square is worth a brief stop both for the monument itself and for what it reveals about how Nanchang understands its place in modern Chinese history. The square sits at the heart of the older commercial district, close to several major hotels, the provincial art museum, and the shopping streets that radiate outward from it, so most travelers will pass through it naturally in the course of a day. A short walk across the plaza, with a pause to read the inscriptions at the tower's base, is usually enough to take in its significance. Visitors with a deeper interest in the 1927 uprising can pair the square with dedicated revolutionary-history museums elsewhere in the city for a fuller picture of the event and its aftermath.
