The Hong Kong Tramways, familiarly known to locals as the ding ding after the distinctive bell rung by the drivers to warn of their approach, is the system of double-decker trams that has run along the northern shore of Hong Kong Island for well over a century, threading slowly between the towers of the waterfront and the foothills of the Peak. It is one of the last surviving fully double-decker tram systems in the world and remains a working piece of the city's public transport network rather than a heritage operation.

The trams run on narrow tracks set into the regular traffic lanes, so they move at the pace of the surrounding vehicles, which on the congested streets of Central, Wan Chai, and Causeway Bay is slow enough to make the ride a sightseeing experience in its own right. The upper deck, open at the sides in good weather, offers an elevated, front-row view of the layered streetscapes of the older urban core, from glass-walled bank towers to traditional shopfronts, temples, and street markets, all of it visible from a vantage point that would be missed from the pavement or the subway.

The flat fare structure and the frequency of the service make the trams particularly well suited to impromptu hops on and off, and many visitors use them as a slow, cheap alternative to the MRT for short journeys between Central, Wan Chai, Causeway Bay, and the older districts further west. The ride is at its most atmospheric in the early evening, when the city is lit but the upper deck is still manageable in terms of heat and humidity, and when the trams take on a more leisurely, end-of-day character.

For a Hong Kong itinerary, a ride on the ding ding ranks alongside the Star Ferry as one of the essential, everyday transit experiences that also happen to be among the most rewarding ways to see the city. It costs very little, requires no planning, and offers a perspective on the northern shore of Hong Kong Island that is difficult to reconstruct from any other vantage point, so most travelers find themselves riding the trams more than once during a stay.
