Mount Emei, rising on the western edge of the Sichuan Basin in Emeishan city, is one of the most culturally and ecologically significant mountains in China and one of only a handful of sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List for combined cultural and natural value. A 5A-rated national scenic area, it is revered as one of the four sacred mountains of Chinese Buddhism and is the principal pilgrimage destination in southwest China. For serious travelers to Sichuan, it is an unmissable counterpart to nearby Leshan.

The mountain's religious history is deep. Buddhism arrived on Emei as early as the first century, making it one of the oldest Buddhist sites in China. Over the following centuries, monasteries multiplied across the slopes, and the mountain became the center of the cult of Samantabhadra (Puxian in Chinese), the bodhisattva associated with practice and vow. Major temples — Baoguo, Wannian, and the Golden Summit shrines among them — are still active today, and pilgrims climb the stone paths alongside ordinary tourists.

Naturalistically, Emei is exceptional. Its vertical relief, from subtropical foothills to subalpine summit, supports one of the richest temperate plant communities in the world, with thousands of plant species, endemic rhododendrons, and old-growth forest fragments. Wildlife includes Tibetan macaques — famously bold along the summit trails — and hundreds of bird species. UNESCO recognition specifically cited the mountain's biodiversity, its geological interest, and its cultural landscape as jointly outstanding.

A full visit typically spans one or two days. Most travelers start at Baoguo Temple at the base, ascend by a mix of stone path, scenic bus, and cableway, and overnight near the summit to catch the sunrise above the cloud sea — the mountain's signature view. The Golden Summit, at roughly 3,079 meters, is crowned by a 48-meter gilded statue of four-faced Samantabhadra and is the spiritual high point of the climb.

For foreign visitors, Mount Emei rewards planning: bring layers for the summit cold, stay overnight near the top if at all possible, and build in a day for the Buddhist architecture as well as the views. Paired with the Leshan Giant Buddha, the other half of the UNESCO property, Emei anchors one of the most rewarding cultural-and-natural loops in southwest China.
