Rather than a conventional stage show, the production moves through a series of interconnected performance spaces, each one rebuilding a link between the present and the distant past.

The narrative traces the Mogao Caves from their first excavation and rise to prosperity through to the modern rediscovery of their hidden treasures, led by the figure of the Daoist monk Wang who uncovered the sealed Library Cave and lifted the veil from a thousand years of buried history. Through this progression, the show invites the audience to travel across time and feel the continuity between ancient Dunhuang and the city visitors see today.

A central ambition of the production is to revive and restore the exquisite, seemingly effortless classical beauty of the Mogao murals, bringing their figures to life through dance and music.
