Гора Хэншань

Mount Heng (Hengshan) — specifically the North Mount Heng, located just south of Hunyuan County in the Datong region — is one of the Five Great Mountains of China, the set of sacred peaks that have anchored Chinese religious and geographic imagination for more than two thousand years. Designated as "Beiyue," the Northern Peak, it has been an important pilgrimage site since the Han dynasty and remains an active religious landscape today, with temples, pavilions, and shrines scattered across its slopes. For travelers visiting the Hanging Temple, a stop at Mount Heng is a natural extension.

The scenic area is divided into several sections, with the Tianfeng Ridge area the most visited and the one that contains the summit trail. The mountain rises sharply from the Hunyuan basin to a height of more than two thousand meters, and the summit trail passes a sequence of Daoist temples, inscriptions, and viewpoints. The most important religious structures, including the Beiyue Temple and several smaller shrines, cling to the slopes and ridges in a manner reminiscent of the better-known Wudang and Hengshan (south) sacred mountains.

Beyond its religious significance, Mount Heng is associated with some of the most beloved legends of Chinese popular religion. The Tang-dynasty immortal Zhang Guolao — one of the Eight Immortals of Daoism — is traditionally said to have cultivated the Way on this mountain, and several sites along the trail are linked to his legend. The mountain's cultural weight, combined with its rugged topography and dramatic position on the northern edge of the Chinese cultural sphere, makes it one of the most evocative of the Five Sacred Peaks.

For travelers, Mount Heng is usually combined with the Hanging Temple and Hunyuan Ancient City into a single day trip from Datong. The summit hike can be shortened by taking a shuttle bus partway up the mountain. Comfortable shoes, layered clothing for the altitude, and a half-day minimum are recommended. The mountain is quieter than the better-known southern Five Peaks, which makes it appealing to travelers who want a sacred-mountain experience without the crowds of Taishan or Huangshan.
