Shaxi Ancient Town is a remarkably well-preserved market town in a high valley about three hours' drive southeast of Dali Old Town, once one of the most important stops on the Tea Horse Road — the ancient trade network that linked tea-producing Yunnan with Tibet, Sichuan, and Burma. With the decline of that caravan trade in the twentieth century, Shaxi slipped into quiet obscurity, which paradoxically preserved its old character more completely than almost any other town in the region. Today it is widely considered one of the most atmospheric destinations in southwest China.

The heart of Shaxi is Sideng Square, a broad rectangular plaza paved in flagstone and ringed by wooden shop-houses, inns, and temple buildings. The square is one of the best-surviving examples of a Tea Horse Road market, where caravans of horses and mules once unloaded tea bricks, salt, and wool. The overarching temple complex on the east side of the square, with its theater stage, wooden galleries, and Buddhist halls, has been carefully restored through an international preservation project and stands as a model for sensitive heritage work.

Beyond the square, the town fans out along narrow lanes that lead to a stone bridge over the Heihui River, a Qing-era theater, a small museum, and the surrounding Bai and Yi farming villages. The atmosphere is quiet, slow, and lived-in — older residents still gather in the plaza, horses are occasionally led through the lanes, and the weekly market draws villagers from the surrounding hills in traditional dress.

The local saying "having seen Dali, having passed Lijiang, do not miss Shaxi" captures the town's unique value. For travelers who can spare the travel time, an overnight stay is far more rewarding than a day trip, since the town reveals its character most fully in the quiet hours of early morning and evening. Pairing Shaxi with a wider Dali–Lijiang loop makes for one of the richest cultural itineraries in Yunnan.
