Карстовый туристический район Улун

The Wulong Karst Tourism Area is a UNESCO World Heritage landscape in Wulong County, east of Chongqing, and one of the most geologically remarkable destinations in China. Part of the broader South China Karst inscription, it brings together a trio of world-class natural attractions — the Three Natural Bridges, the Longshuixia Fissure Gorge, and the Houping Tiankeng sinkhole cluster — that together tell the story of how hundreds of thousands of years of water acting on limestone can produce architecture as grand as anything built by human hands.

The signature features are the tiankeng — giant, sky-hung sinkholes hundreds of meters across and deep — and the natural bridges that form when a cave roof partially collapses to leave an arch of rock spanning a gorge. Visitors can descend into the belly of these pits via trails and elevators, looking up at sheer rock walls wreathed in cloud and listening to underground rivers far below. The fissure gorges offer a complementary experience: long, narrow clefts in the limestone where the sky narrows to a strip and waterfalls drift across the path.

Wulong's karst landscapes also have deep cultural and cinematic resonance. The Three Natural Bridges served as the filming location for Curse of the Golden Flower and Transformers: Age of Extinction, and the broader area has become a magnet for hikers, photographers, and geology enthusiasts from around the world. The juxtaposition of soaring stone arches, hanging cliff vegetation, and the cool mist of underground streams creates an atmosphere that feels closer to fantasy than to ordinary tourism.

Planning a visit is straightforward thanks to a centralized visitor center in Xiannüshan Town. Most travelers combine the Three Natural Bridges, Longshuixia Fissure Gorge, and Fairy Mountain into a one- or two-day circuit. Comfortable shoes, a light rain layer for the wetter sections of the gorges, and a willingness to climb many stairs are essential. The karst is best photographed mid-morning and mid-afternoon, when the sun angle lights up the interior walls of the sinkholes without blowing out the highlights.
