Высокогорный луг Юньчжун

Yunzhong Grassland, whose name means "grassland in the clouds," is a high-altitude meadow area near the town of Datian in Fengning county, sitting at the edge of the Bashang plateau northwest of Chengde. Formerly known as the Liushugou Savanna, it rises above two thousand meters and spreads across roughly seventy square kilometers of original-growth scenery, combining open grassland with patches of sparse forest, wetlands, and clear streams. For travelers seeking a quieter, less-developed corner of the Bashang region, it is one of the most rewarding stops.

The landscape is the draw. Rolling grasslands stretch out under big skies, broken by clusters of low trees and shrubs that give the area its distinctive savanna-like character, and by glittering wetlands where wildflowers crowd the margins in summer. Wooden walkways lead across the wetter patches and up onto the ridges, where the air thins and the views open across the plateau. The pace here is slow: the point of a visit is less about ticking off named sights and more about long walks, clean air, and the kind of silence that is increasingly rare in eastern China.

Plan for at least half a day, and ideally longer if you enjoy hiking. The best season runs from early summer through early autumn, when the wildflowers are in bloom and the grass is tall; outside that window the plateau turns cold and the wind picks up quickly. Sturdy shoes are a good idea even on the boardwalks, as some sections of trail are rougher than they look. Sun protection matters at this altitude, and warm layers are essential for the evening even in midsummer.

Yunzhong Grassland pairs naturally with other Bashang destinations such as Fengning Bashang Grassland, Mulan Paddock, and the Baili Sky Road, and it suits travelers who want to slow down and experience the plateau on foot rather than through a car window. It is a wonderful stop for nature lovers, photographers, and anyone in search of a genuinely peaceful corner of northern China.
