Saihantala Urban Grassland, also known as the Genghis Khan Grassland Eco-Park, is one of Baotou's most distinctive public spaces: a stretch of natural grassland preserved within the city limits themselves. Its Mongolian name translates simply as Beautiful Grassland, and that is exactly what it offers, an expanse of meadow, ponds, and sky improbably set among the streets and towers of a modern industrial city. For visitors who want a taste of the Mongolian steppe without leaving town, there may be no easier option in all of Inner Mongolia.

What makes Saihantala special is the contrast. For anyone whose itinerary does not allow a trip out to the distant grasslands, Saihantala is the perfect substitute, and even for those heading onward to the steppe, it is a lovely introduction and a relaxing pause in the city.
