The Hu Kuizhang brush craft descends from the studio founded in 1823 and is the only surviving hand brush-making technique in the northeast, noted above all for wolf-hair brushes.

The work spans eight stages—materials, hair-sorting, hemp treatment, water-basin shaping, shaft-making, fitting, drying and engraving—across 126 hand steps, with the water-basin hair work the most critical.

문화적 의의

Listed as provincial intangible heritage in 2007, the craft ranks with the famed brushes of Beijing and Shanghai as one of China's three great brush traditions, a flagship of northeastern scholar's-studio arts.
