Jin Opera, also known as 'Central-Route Clapper Opera', took shape during the Daoguang reign of the Qing dynasty; it is sung in Shanxi dialect and marked by the jujube-wood clapper, widely popular across central Shanxi including Pingyao.

Its singing style is vigorous and unrestrained with soaring pitch, all role types are represented, and its large repertoire covers historical stories, folk legends and more; performances are common at Pingyao temple fairs and festivals.

Jin Opera is an important marker of Shanxi local cultural identity; stage platforms preserved inside Pingyao's ancient city walls continue to host performances as a vital part of local cultural life.
