Matryoshka Painting Craft

성급 무형문화유산
기원

The matryoshka is Russia's most iconic painted wooden craft, brought to Manzhouli by the Chinese Eastern Railway and the community of Russian settlers. Over a century Manzhouli has turned the nesting doll from an import into a civic emblem: the city is home to the Guinness-certified world's largest matryoshka, and its painting has grown into a local folk craft.

예술 형식

Craftsmen turn linden or birch into a set of nestling wooden blanks, sand and prime them, then hand-paint figures, flowers, birds and fairy-tale scenes with mineral pigments before sealing with clear varnish; a set may hold anywhere from a few layers to several dozen, the composition and palette guided entirely by the painter's eye.

문화적 의의

Matryoshka painting carries a century of Sino-Russian cultural exchange at the frontier; it is the most direct carrier of Manzhouli's city image and a vivid case for studying the localisation of frontier crafts and the fusion of culture with tourism.

체험할 수 있는 곳

Matryoshka painting and related displays can be seen and tried at the Manzhouli Matryoshka Scenic Area.
