Kunming Diao (Folk Tunes)

Kunming Diao broadly refers to the mountain songs and ditties of Han communities in urban Kunming and around Dianchi Lake in Chenggong and Jinning, locally called 'diaozi'; it entered Yunnan's fifth provincial ICH list in 2022.

Usually sung in improvised exchange across fields and hills regardless of season, it gathers at traditional song fairs such as the third-of-the-third mountain-song meet and the horse-racing song fair.

Kunming Diao records the feelings and dialect cadence of Han life around Dianchi Lake, an important vehicle for studying the region's folk music.
